Rawan Nasser, Ph.D.

Expert in historical & continuous trauma among indigenous people

About

I come from the worlds of academia and practice, seeking to blend the two in the field of social work. My Ph.D. research explores continuous trauma, focusing on first- and second-generation experiences of the Nakba in the Palestinian context. I specifically look at Palestinian refugees' psychosocial experiences and coping mechanisms as uprooted persons and families living in refugee camps. Blending my research insights with eight years of experience as a social worker in East Jerusalem, I offer a new understanding of the complex psychosocial situation faced by people who are uprooted and/or encounter ongoing political violence. I seek to encourage other researchers and professionals to more holistically address trauma and agentic coping strategies in the midst of complex situations.
